Garage cabinet and slatwall warranties: what is covered and how to keep it that way
A garage system can carry a five-year, lifetime or one-year warranty depending on the part. Here is what each covers, what voids it and how to care for it.
Coverage differs by part, and installation decides a lot of it
Under Proslat's written terms, its Fusion PLUS and LUX cabinets are warranted for five years against defects in material and workmanship, with lifetime coverage on drawer slides and hinges, while its PVC slatwall panels carry a lifetime warranty and its Garage Gator motorized hoist carries one year. All of these extend only to the first retail purchaser, and all exclude damage from improper installation, overloading and misuse. Keeping coverage mostly comes down to installing to the instructions, respecting the weight ratings, and a little routine care.
I run the Dallas Proslat Garage Store, and warranty questions usually come up in two moments: before someone buys, when they want to know what they are getting, and years later, when a drawer sticks or a hook bends. This guide is for both. It summarizes what Proslat's warranty documents say, but the documents themselves govern, so ask for the terms for the exact products in your design.
Cabinets: five years on the box, lifetime on the moving parts
Proslat's cabinet warranty covers new cabinets bought in North America against defects in material or workmanship for five years from the date of purchase. If a cabinet is defective, Proslat will replace it as long as it was installed and maintained according to the printed instructions, and a replacement inherits the remaining warranty period rather than starting a new one. The same document states that all slides and hinges come with a lifetime warranty.
The cabinet care instructions are short, and they double as the conditions for keeping coverage: indoor use only, keep the cabinets on a level surface, respect the weight capacities in the instruction booklet, check all screws and nuts periodically for tightness, and clean the surfaces with a soft rag and water. Proslat's installation guide lists those capacities as 200 pounds per shelf and 500 pounds on the work surface, with drawers rated between 150 and 300 pounds depending on the drawer.
Two of those conditions trip people up more than the others. The first is level: cabinets on a sloped floor that were never adjusted put stress on doors and hinges, and the installation guide is clear that the feet must be leveled before cabinets are connected. The second is weight. A drawer packed with heavy sockets and hand tools can approach its rating faster than you would expect, so spread the heaviest items across the lower drawers.
Slatwall: lifetime coverage, with conditions
Proslat warrants its PVC slatwall panels against defects in material or workmanship for a lifetime period, for the first retail purchaser. A defective panel is replaced as long as it was installed and maintained according to the printed instructions and local building codes.
The exclusions are worth reading closely because they are where most claims fail. The warranty does not cover damage from improper installation, misuse or abuse; acts of God, fire or accident; damage created by non-Proslat accessories such as hooks, baskets, cabinets and shelving; or damage from loading accessories beyond the panel's stated maximum of 75 pounds per square foot. In practice that means panels screwed into every stud, studs no more than 16 inches apart or plywood behind them, and only Proslat accessories on the wall.
If you are not sure whether your wall was installed that way, the visible signs help. Panels should sit tight and straight, with no gaps opening between rows and no bowing under loaded hooks. If a section looks like it is pulling away from the wall, unload it and have it checked before adding anything else.
Overhead racks and ceiling lifts
Proslat's storage rack warranty covers material and workmanship defects on the condition that the rack is installed as described in its instructions and never loaded beyond 800 pounds when mounted directly to studs. It does not cover corrosion, rust or discoloration of paint, or failures caused by misuse, abuse, faulty installation or alteration. Proslat's product page lists the ProRack with a lifetime warranty.
The Garage Gator motorized hoist is different. Its instructions state a one-year warranty on defects in material or workmanship, for the hoist in the possession of the first retail purchaser. The exclusions include improper installation, overloading beyond the stated capacity of 220 pounds, accessories not developed by the manufacturer, and corrosion, rust or discoloration of the finish.
Overhead pieces deserve the most respect because a failure falls on whatever is below it. Load racks evenly rather than piling the heaviest bins at one end, and keep a rough tally of what goes up so you stay well inside the rating. For a lift, weigh bulky items like a kayak or cargo box before you hang them, rather than guessing.
What no part of the warranty pays for
Across the cabinet, slatwall, rack and hoist documents, a few exclusions repeat. Knowing them up front avoids disappointment later, and most of them are within your control.
- Damage from improper installation, misuse, abuse or alteration
- Overloading beyond the published weight ratings
- Damage from accessories made by other brands
- Corrosion due to humidity on cabinets, and rust or discoloration on racks and hoists
- Surface damage to cabinets from chemical interaction
- The cost of labor, accessory materials and shipping to return a defective product
Keep the paperwork where you can find it
Every one of these warranties requires proof of purchase. Proslat's cabinet and slatwall documents say you will need your original proof of purchase and photos illustrating the claimed defect to obtain warranty service. Save the invoice, the design or quote that lists the exact products, and the installation date, ideally in the same folder as the instruction booklets.
Because coverage extends only to the first retail purchaser, it does not transfer when you sell the house. That is worth knowing if you are deciding between a garage project now and one after a move, and it is a good reason to keep the paperwork organized while you own the home. If you are still comparing companies, add warranty terms to the questions you ask before hiring.
A photo record helps too. Take a few pictures of each wall right after installation, before anything is loaded. If a question ever comes up about how a panel or cabinet was installed, those photos show the starting condition far better than memory can.
A simple care routine for the whole system
A garage system needs very little upkeep, and the routine below follows the care sections of Proslat's instructions. I suggest tying it to something you already do, like changing the air filter or the clocks, so it actually happens.
- Cabinets: check screws and nuts for tightness, confirm the run is still level, and wipe surfaces with a soft rag and water
- Spills: wipe up chemicals promptly to avoid surface damage the warranty does not cover
- Slatwall: clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent, or a pressure washer on a low setting, and avoid abrasive cleaners and sharp objects
- Hooks and shelves: move heavy items low and check nothing exceeds its rating
- Ceiling lift: check that the motor is tight on its mounting plate, and inspect cords, plugs, controls and straps for wear or slippage
- Overhead storage: confirm it still clears the garage door
Using a ceiling lift the way it was designed
Motorized lifts are the part of a garage system most likely to be used wrong, so the operating rules are worth repeating. Proslat's instructions for the 220-pound Garage Gator say not to stand under the lift, to distribute weight evenly, to secure items before raising them, and never to lift people or animals. The motor should rest for 8 minutes after 2 minutes of continuous running.
The hand control has a key lock that disables the lift when the key is turned off or removed, which is worth using if children play in the garage. In a hot garage, the instruction to let the unit cool down after use is another reason not to run it up and down repeatedly. Adding on later without causing problems
Most garage systems grow. When you add a wall, a lift or a set of hooks, the same rules apply as on day one: Proslat accessories on Proslat panels, fasteners into framing, and loads within the published ratings. If you are doing the addition yourself, read what a DIY slatwall and cabinet install involves before you start.
It also helps to work from the original design. If I drew your garage, I can extend the layout so new pieces line up with the old ones, and so a new lift does not end up where a future rack should go. If you are planning a garage from scratch, start with turning a packed garage into storage that works.
If something goes wrong
If a drawer, hinge, panel or rack seems defective, take clear photos of the problem, find your proof of purchase, and stop loading that part until it is checked. Then contact us or Proslat customer service with the photos and the product details. If we installed your system, I can help work out whether it is an adjustment, a warranty issue or something else.
And if you are earlier in the process, the showroom in Richardson is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and Saturdays by appointment, and I offer free in-home quotes across the Dallas area. I bring the warranty terms for the products in your design, so you know exactly what you are getting before you order. A first order placed through an in-home quote carries a 5% discount.
